This variety displays true variegation (color mix). The striking green and white mottling of the leaves makes the plant very attractive. The amount of white area varies to a certain extent, according to environmental conditions.
The ‘Elepaio’ has large, dark green, heart-shaped leaves that resemble a shield. These leaves can reach 3-4 feet in length. This plant can reach heights of 6-7 feet tall.
This taro rarely flowers when grown indoors; however, once it’s well-established outdoors, flowering is more common. The flowers appear in a small green sheath, which holds a green/yellow cob of flowers that have no scent.
Plant taro in the ground or in large containers using a rich loam soil, and with 3-6 feet of space in between plants. They prefer moist soil or up to a few inches of water above the top of the pot. They prefer a light partial shade but still strong light, and in these conditions, they can grow quite large.
