Fancy Tiger shrimp are a hybrid variety of shrimp that are bred in captivity. They inherit the coloring of the crystal shrimp parent, with distinctive stripes and patterns on their bodies. They are typically red or black, with the color depending on the parent species. Adult Fancy Tiger shrimp can reach a size of about 3 cm (1.2 inches).
Caring for Fancy Tiger shrimp can be somewhat challenging, as they prefer a low pH around 6.0 and a limited KH range of 0 to 1. They thrive in aquariums with active or buffering substrate that helps keep the water acidic. They do not require a heater unless the room temperature falls below 20 C (68 F). A minimum tank size of 5 gallons (19 liters) is recommended, but 10 gallons (38 liters) or more is ideal.
Fancy Tiger shrimp’s diet mainly consists of small bits of food like biofilm, algae, and other types of vegetation. They can also eat various foods such as algae wafers, bee pollen, shrimp pellets, and blanched vegetables.
The best tank mates for Fancy Tiger shrimp are other shrimp in the Caridina family and common snails as they share similar preferences for water pH and KH level.
