The 3cm black neon tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi, originates from the Paraguay basin of southern Brazil, thriving in small tributaries and creeks with acidic, brown-stained water. These striking tetras are ideal for small aquariums, reaching just over 3cm in adult size. Their schooling nature makes them best suited for groups of six or more, and they integrate seamlessly into peaceful community tanks. They coexist harmoniously with various other small fish like rasboras, danios, dwarf gouramis, and corys, but should be kept away from larger, aggressive tankmates.
Low maintenance and undemanding, black neon tetras require clean water and a diet consisting of small invertebrates, plants, crustacea, and algae. Their varied diet can include flakes, frozen foods, live worms, and brine shrimp for optimal health and vibrant coloration. To ensure their well-being, a tank of at least 20 inches in length and a secure cover are recommended, as these adept jumpers may attempt escape. Regular water changes of 25 to 50 percent every other week are essential, particularly in densely stocked tanks.
